THE WORK, EXPLAINED
Start with the condition.
Understand the scope.
Identify the required door arrangement and confirm which leaf will normally operate. Ask the provider to specify the frame, threshold, meeting-edge hardware and lockset, together with the removal and finishing scope. Have the proposal explain how alignment and the operation of both leaves will be checked and how additional opening repairs would be handled.
What may be involved
- prehung French door pair
- astragal
- hinges
- flush bolts
- lockset
- threshold
- flashing
- casing
Ask the provider to distinguish existing parts to inspect, proposed replacements, and tools, materials or reports included in the service. Confirm the work and exclusions after assessment; this list does not mean that every item will be supplied or replaced.

Planning your work
San Francisco's Department of Building Inspection publishes step-by-step instructions for over-the-counter permits covering doors, windows, reroofing and other common exterior residential projects. The page lists in-kind window replacement and in-kind exterior door replacement, at the same size and location, among the projects eligible for over-the-counter review through the PermitSF portal, and separately says that new windows or exterior doors in new locations are among the projects that need plans. Read it before agreeing a scope, and confirm the address, the opening and the review route with the department. It does not decide eligibility, timing or requirements for an individual property.
